Mike Nichol s second story detailing the shady dealing of bent security guys Pylon and Mace is a confused affair to begin with Readers who have not read Payback will feel out of place and although the story settles down after a hundred pages or so, it never really delivers any suspense or tension Nichol s work is a series of greys, with no characters falling in to black or white morality and where this may be deliberate it weakens the relationship between reader and the characters The components of the plot are interesting shady politicians, a ruthless hitman and a woman with a score to settle, however Nichols does not evidence enough skill with his wit or narrative to turn them in to a great novel The This is the second book in the trilogy, but I happened to read it first, having picked it up in an airport bookstore What a find Nicols follows the adventures well, misadventures, really of two unsympathetic but realistic characters Mace Bishop and Pylon Buso who are being relentlessly but secretly persecuted by Sheemina February, a woman they interrogated and tortured during the apartheid years as counter intelligence operatives for the liberation movement Well, I did say they were unsympathetic Sheemina is determined to systematically destroy them, drive them insane, or kill them, preferably all of the above.
